The Stokes Purple sweet potato is grown in California and is non-GMO. Frieda's is a 2nd generation female-owned family business started in 1962 by Dr. Frieda Rapoport Caplan. At this time, she became the first woman in the U.S. to own and operate a produce company on the all-male L.A. Wholesale Product Market. Frieda began buying and selling unusual items (at the time) like brown mushrooms, Sunchokes and spaghetti squash. She then exported the first load of fuzzy, brown kiwifruit from New Zealand, kick-starting her lifelong career introducing over 200 fruits and vegetable to American supermarkets.
